1988: The Year Cards Started to Change

I know I skimmed over or forgot some important points in this video. If I forgot something, go ahead and post it in the comments.

Here's the post Dinged Corners did. The normal timeline will be back on the next video (that is, if I don't get busted for copyright infringement).

2007 Heritage Video Pack Rip

I figured I'd take the "Repack Experiment" title off these videos, since I know everything's working OK with the videos (and they're being surprisingly well received). This video shows off my cards from the 70s, as well as another pack rip.

There were a surprising number of Pilots and ex-Pilots in the 70s cards I picked to show off. I coulda done all Cito Gaston cards from '73 to '77 (except for '75). I didn't realize I had so many cards of him as a player.

WV Cards Videos Present: Repack Experiment (part 4)

I think I'm geting better at these videos. I know y'all probably miss seeing me show off my mad guitar skillz, though. I'll play some on the next video.

If you want to help my friend Kevin with his 1965 Topps set, go here.

WV Cards Videos Present: Repack Experiment (part 3)

For those of you that were wondering, yes, most of my shirts have Jimi Hendrix on them. All of my other ones have the Beatles on them (except for one shirt with Miles Davis on it).

WV Cards Videos Present: Repack Experiment (part 2)

Since everyone that saw my last pack break video (all three of you!) liked it so much, I thought I'd do another one. Here are things to remember when you watch my videos (at least, until I get used to doing this):

1.) I'm really shy, and I get nervous when it comes to talking to a bunch of people about a specific topic. That's why I started playing guitar in my videos. It gave me something to do besides a bunch of blah-blah-blah. I still get nervous, though, and sometimes my mind goes blank. Oh well.

2.) When I play guitar, I have to look at the neck. I figure that's OK, though. I mean, Robert Fripp can't play standing up, ad Frank Zappa couldn't sing and play at the same time.

Anyway, on to the video!

Flea Market Finds

As some of you know, I just got my driver's license this past Wednesday. To celebrate, I went on a road trip to visit my cousins in Caldwell, Ohio. On the way home Saturday, I decided to stop at the Rink's flea market in nearby Marietta. There were a couple booths/stalls/whatchamacallits that sold baseball cards, and this is what I bought.

A quartet of 1977 Topps I found in the 50 cent box in one guy's booth. All of these fit the groups of players I like to collect.

A 1966 Topps Felipe Alou in the 50 cent box. It looks like someone got hungry and nibbled on the corner.

A 1974 Topps Cito Gaston from his stint with the immortal Washington National League team. This was in the same guy's dollar box.

A 1961 Post Billy Martin. I got this for tree fiddy at another guy's booth. Nice, huh?

Pack Rip: 2009 Topps Series 2 Rack Pack

I was gonna do a video of this pack rip, but I had problems the last time I tried uploading a video to Youtube. If I can figure out what happened soon, I'll video the next pack break I do. On to the cards:

Top half:

386 Jonathan Papelbon
340 Joe Mauer
354 Mike Aviles All Star Rookie (with the white box around the trophy)
472 Bill Hall
518 Chris Perez
569 Ted Lilly (Any relation to Eli?)
628 Diamondbacks Classic Combos (Upton/Young)
351 Chris Snyder
417 Jason Marquis (He's playing for the Rockies now? Who knew?)
TR56 Carlos Zambrano Turkey Red
589 Ricky Romero Rookie Card
379 Mark Hendrickson
475 Chipper Jones
494 Gary Matthews Jr.
462 James Loney (I almost typed Lonely there. :-P )
391 Dan Haren
399 Wandy Rodriguez
376 Rajai Davis (Last I remember, he was on the Pirates.)

Bottom half:

562 Cecil Cooper
578 Adam Kennedy (Another guy who I didn't realize had switched teams.)
618 Brandon Backe
410 Lou Piniella (Sweet!)
517 Kevin Frandsen
464 Bobby Crosby
426 Pablo Sandoval
619 Chris Carter (No, not this one.)
504 Felix Pie (Mmm... pie...)
441 Andrew Bailey Rookie Card
471 Kerry Wood
TT50 Chase Utley Toppstown Blue
493 Ramiro Pena Rookie Card
528 Nick Swisher
646 Chris Iannetta
590 Johnny Damon
502 Yovani Gallardo
421 B.J. Ryan
335 Chris Young, outfielder
624 Ben Francisco

It's not a flea market repack, and none of these cards had fungus on them, but at least I didn't get doubles upon doubles like I did before I quit buying Series 1.

The One That Got Away

My early years of baseball card collecting were punctuated by many stupid decisions, but none as regretted as the decision I made to trade this card away sometime in the mid 1990s. It was the oldest card in my collection (at least, until I got my 1970 Topps Joe Morgan). I traded this card to one of my friends for a pretty big stack of cards. I thought I got a good deal, but as the years went on, I realized how dumb of a decision I had made.

I was talking to another of my friends online a few days ago about this blog, and specifically how I couldn't think of anything to write about. She suggested that I write about the one card I've always been looking for. I don't have any cards that would fit that description, but thinking about it made me remember this card and how it got away from me. While we were talking, I looked on eBay to see if I could find a copy of it, and I actually found one for $3 (including shipping). Of course, I had to buy it.

I guess all I have to say is thanks Floor, and welcome home Brooks.

A sad day for my collection...

Lately, the card selection at my local Walmart has been really slim. Many of you might remember me saying that they never got any 2009s in when the rest of the stores got them. I went to Walmart yesterday to see if they got any in yet.

They don't have any cards any more.

The place they were in is now filled with "As Seen On TV" crap.

All-Billy Team

Kevin over at Orioles Cards put together an All-Kevin team. As good as that team is, I don't think it has a chance against my All-Billy Team.

C - Bill Dickey (10x All-Star, HOF)
1B - Bill Skowron (6x All-Star)
2B - Bill Mazeroski (7x All-Star, HOF)
SS - Bill Russell (3x All-Star)
3B - Bill Madlock (ROY, 3x All-Star)
RF - Bill Robinson
CF - Bill Virdon (ROY)
LF - Billy Williams (ROY, 6x All-Star, HOF)
DH - Bill Hall

C - Bill Freehan (11x All-Star)
IF - Billy Martin (1x All-Star)
IF - Bill Spiers
IF - Bill Almon
OF - Bill Buckner (1x All-Star)
OF - Billy Hatcher

SP - Bill Singer (2x All-Star)
SP - Bill Swift
SP - Bill Lee (1x All-Star)
SP - Bill Krueger
SP - Bill Wegman
RP - Bill Caudill (1x All-Star)
RP - Bill Campbell (1x All-Star)
RP - Bill Dawley (1x All-Star)
RP - Billy Koch
CL - Billy Wagner (6x All-Star)

The pitching staff and bench are a little iffy, but I think they'd more than hold their own against any other All-Name team.

Sweet Redemption

There STILL aren't any 2009s at my local Walmart. I wanted to bust some wax, though, so I bought a box of 2008 Topps Heritage High Number. I think I chose wisely.

Still Open For Business

I really need to get my butt in gear and start posting more on here. While I think of my next post, here's some football insanity I found recently.

Makes me laugh every time I watch it.

Three Pack Break: 2008 UD Timeline

I had to go to the DMV in Moundsville about a week ago, and while I was in the area I decided to stop by the huge Walmart near there. They had some 2009s, which I bought (and forgot to post about... oops). When I got off work today, I stopped by the Walmart close to where I work in New Martinsville. I know the Wally World we have here is smaller than the one up in Moundsville, but I was still surprised to find that they didn't have ANY 2009s yet. I still wanted to get some cards, so I settled for 3 packs of Timeline (and a bag of jelly beans).

Pack 1:

22 Jake Peavy
40 Miguel Cabrera
13 Alfonso Soriano (with a dinged corner Patricia and Lucy would love)
84 Joey Votto RC
YSL2256 Johnny Mize Yankee Stadium Legacy
142 Albert Pujols '94 All-Time Heroes

Pack 2:

16 Lance Berkman
34 Nick Markakis
7 John Smoltz
25 Brandon Webb
64 Hiroki Kuroda RC
132 Frank Thomas '94 All-Time Heroes

Pack 3:

22 Jake Peavy (again)
40 Miguel Cabrera (Again.)
13 Alfonso Soriano (AGAIN!!!)
123 Max Scherzer RC '92 Minor League
181 Brandon Boggs RC '95 SP Top Prospects
292 Justin Ruggiano RC '04 Timeless Teams

I love this set, but the collation for the packs SUCKS. This wasn't as bad as the first two packs I ever bought of this set (three doubles in two packs), but it was pretty close. I hope the '09s come here soon.

There's a really serious computer virus making the rounds. I posted about it on my other blog. You can read the article I wrote here.
